Why Attend Counselling / Psychotherapy?

Counselling is useful when you are struggling in life and do not feel like you are getting what you want from it.  You may suspect that something isn't quite right though you may be unsure as to what that is and/or how to go about fixing it.  You may be getting input, feedback or advice from people around you on your life and yet you might be wondering what an impartial professional psychotherapist thinks as well.  Attending counselling sessions can give you a chance to connect with your inner voice and decide for yourself what is making you feel happy and what is bringing you down.  Counselling and psychotherapy can also help empower you to make choices that you can feel proud of and that will serve you well in your life.

What is the Counselling / Psychotherapy Process?

Counselling can be scary to contemplate for someone that has either never before attended a session or for someone that has had a bad previous experience in another counselling session.  In my experiences, counselling can feel extremely fruitful and nourishing if a client attends with a therapist that he or she trusts.  Counselling  can quickly become a place where self-exploration is meaningful, interesting and illuminating.  Some people say and believe that working in counselling can be the best gift you ever give to yourself.

The process in counselling is relatively simple.  You talk about what you would like to talk about - usually something that has been bothering your or you are finding difficult to handle in life.  At Authentic, the therapist will listen, ask questions to make sure that she understands you as well as she can and then she will share with you what her reactions are and what her feedback is to what you are telling her.  Oftentimes in counselling sessions, the therapist has insight into your issues from her education, research, experiences as a professional therapist and experiences as a person.  In exploring both what you say and bring to a counselling session and what the therapist notices and shares, you will most likely discover greater awareness into the issues that you are interested in and are more likely to find effective solutions.  You will also probably find yourself feeling more satisfied in life, content and at relative peace from the issues that were previously bothering you.

It is entirely up to you how often or how long you attend counselling.  Some people choose to attend sessions regularly for years as they explore all of their lingering questions and the many facets of their lives.  For some people, it can take awhile in counselling to unravel their past and build a brighter, more resilient and satisfying future.  Some people choose to attend counselling once or only a few times.  Brief attendance can be helpful if there are acute issues and certain pieces of feedback that a person might be seeking.  Some people choose to attend counselling for a period of time and frequency in between these two extremes.  At Authentic, the psychotherapist will work with clients for the duration and frequency that suits the client.  If the client is interested, the therapist will recommend a frequency and duration for counselling once therapeutic goals are discussed and mutually understood.  The client still holds the freedom to attend as it suits him or her.

Can I Attend without a GP Referral and Is My Attendance Attached to My Medical Record?

Counselling and psychotherapy services provided at Authentic are private and self-referred, meaning no GP referral is required to attend counselling sessions.  It also means that there is no attachment of your attendance in counselling to your medical record.  Fees are comparable to a standard gap payment that a person might pay to a Registered, Clinical or Counselling Psychologist that can and does offer Medicare rebates.

I am an enthusiastic and warm psychotherapist and counsellor.  I enjoy the work that I do in this role and in helping people navigate through personal challenges in life to find an overall greater sense of satisfaction.  Depression, anxiety, and other mental illnesses are real, serious and are also treatable.  No one needs to feel awful for prolonged periods of time when it is related to how we fit in, how we are loved, how we feel about ourselves, how we live, what our relationships are like and what we are doing in our lives.  There are pathways to happiness, peace and greater awareness.  That's where counselling - especially in my practice - can help.  I work with clients by helping them to discover new pathways.

When people feel really bad about or dissatisfied with themselves, their relationships, work or the world in general it is usually an indicator that psychotherapy or counselling can help.  Sometimes our thought patterns focus on what we know, which is sometimes what we have been told either by parents or teachers or friends or partners that may not always have been sensitive to us or taking us seriously.  Sometimes we can know what we need to do for healthy changes but find that it is really difficult to take the necessary steps. By talking through what our current thoughts and patterns are in counselling, we get a chance to experience something different, something to ponder further, perhaps something we didn't know before.  Change can start in the counselling / psychotherapy sessions.  This is where we start to increase our awareness and also learn to listen to a quieter inner voice that would actually relish being handed a microphone.  This quieter inner voice can grow, develop, amplify and guide each of us to greater satisfaction, more frequent happiness and a deep sense of peace.

In my practice I primarily combine psychoanalytic techniques with the Gestalt modality of psychotherapy, which means that I highlight and work towards increased personal awareness and greater insight with clients.  This way of working also focuses on creating and maintaining healthy interpersonal functioning.  As a therapist, I also like help people to feel more empowered and more in control of their emotional and physical lives.  I also draw upon cognitive behavioural therapeutic and mindfulness techniques in my practice.

I am a fully-accredited Gestalt psychotherapist and counsellor.  I also have earned a Graduate Diploma in Psychology from Monash University (Honours) with High Distinction.  I am also registered with the Psychotherapy and Counselling Federation of Australia, PACFA Reg. Clinical 23443 and with the Australian Psychology Society, APS Student Member 225735.  Counselling and psychotherapy is my second career.  In my first career, I worked for 15 years as a professional geoscientist in the petroleum industry.  As a foundation to that work, I earned a BS, MS (Geological Sciences) and an MBA.

I do work with GPs where this is agreeable to all parties.
